HISTORY

The history of Holwert takes us back to the early Middle Ages, with its origins around the eighth century. The oldest mention of the village name refers to the church of 'Holeuurt', which is mentioned in an 11th-century list of churches as belonging to the Echternach Abbey.

The church has a unique location, originally outside the dike on a separate mound, separated from the elongated village mound to the southeast. Before 1580, the village was partly outside the dike, creating a port and market function. This market right was granted in 1453, together with two other villages in Friesland. The current sea wall dates from 1580 and is located more than a kilometer northwest of the village, a tangible reminder of the centuries-long battle against the water.

BUSINESS

Holwert has a rich history of activity. In the past, no fewer than five gin distilleries and three beer breweries flourished there. Until the mid-18th century, fishing played an important role in the village. Nowadays, Holwert is mainly known as the gateway to Ameland thanks to the ferry service. Over the centuries, non-agricultural activity has left a clear mark on the development and construction of the village.

BUILDINGS

The village center of Holwert is elongated and densely built-up, with a mix of historic houses and stately buildings. The characteristic sidewalks on the Hegebuorren are striking, created in the 1870s when the street level was lowered. The track of the Leeuwarden-Dokkum line, constructed in the early 20th century, also once ran here. Although passenger transport was stopped in the 1930s and freight transport ended in 1974, the route remains a reminder of an era when Holwert was an important connection point.

Holwert is a village with a rich history, but also with an eye to the future. Although the ambitious project Holwerd aan Zee, which wanted to connect the village with the Wadden Sea, became known as a symbol of innovation and sustainability, the plan ultimately did not go ahead. Financial and organizational challenges led to the termination of the project, which was disappointing to many in the region. Yet Holwert has shown that it dares to dream and that the community looks at new possibilities together.

Although Holwerd aan Zee has not been realized, there remain numerous opportunities to further develop Holwert as an attractive village for both residents and visitors.
